Why is the Franklin Square Station reopening?

With the growth of the surrounding neighborhoods near Franklin Square Park, the reopening of Franklin Square Station will serve as a destination within the vibrant urban fabric, connecting neighborhoods across Philadelphia and South Jersey.

How will the Franklin Square Station benefit me?

The reopened station will provide additional transportation options for the community and will complement the surrounding park and developments. The station will provide quick and easy intercity travel to Rittenhouse Square and access to New Jersey.

When will construction start and finish?

Construction began in March 2022 and is expected to be completed by Spring 2024.

How much will it cost to reopen the Franklin Square Station?

Approximately $30 million will be invested by DRPA/PATCO to reopen the station.

What road closures around Franklin Square should motorists expect during construction?

Motorists should expect periodic lane closures along 7th Street and 6th Streets.

Will construction happen overnight?

Most construction activities are planned to occur during the daytime hours. However, limited construction may be required during the overnight hours.

Will PATCO train service be affected by construction?

PATCO service will continue to operate 24/7/365 during construction. For PATCO schedule information, please visit RidePATCO.org

Which SEPTA bus routes will be impacted by construction?

The bus shelter at 7th Street and Race Streets that is served by SEPTA Bus Route 47 will be temporarily discontinued for the duration of construction. The bus shelter is expected to return at construction completion. The closest stop for Route 47 is 7th Street and Market Street.

Which NJ Transit bus routes will be impacted by construction?

NJ TRANSIT bus routes are not expected to be impacted by construction.

Will public access to the park be interrupted during construction?

The park will remain open for the duration of construction. Park entrances in the vicinity of the station may be closed. When a park entrance is closed, visitors can use an alternate, nearby entrance.

Will Franklin Square Park events be impacted by construction?

Events at Franklin Square Park are not expected to be impacted by construction. But, playground access from outside the park, after 5 pm, will not be available while construction is occurring on 7th Street. We anticipate access will be restored in the next few weeks. We apologize for the inconvenience.

When completed, how will the new station affect the park at Franklin Square?

The goal of the new Franklin Square Station will be to integrate into the existing community and fabric of the park by providing access and mobility using PATCO. The new station will enhance connectivity across the City of Philadelphia as well as into New Jersey. The new ADA-compliant station will link PATCO riders and the local community with SEPTA and NJ TRANSIT bus routes.

DRPA and PATCO are working with several City of Philadelphia departments including CONNECT Planning Committee, Art Commission, OTIS, Parks & Recreation; Historic Philadelphia Inc.; Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation; Callowhill Neighborhood Association; Old City District; DVRPC, and more.
